After the ban on entering the White House for the American television CNN and other media, four more big ones television networks are temporarily limiting their coverage of the president to Donald Trump, writes the German "Spiegel".
ABC, CBS, Fox News and NBC announced Monday, along with CNN, that they would no longer cover Trump's appearances. These televisions belong to the so-called "pool" (joint group), which, according to a rotation system, travels with Trump to events and provides video material for European media as well.
"No government can restrict a media outlet simply because it disapproves of its reporting," the five television networks said. In addition to CNN, Trump banned access to the White House and MS NOW TV, as well as the "Politico" platform, which is owned by the Springer-Verlag publishing house. The president explained it with "fake news" about his work.
The three media outlets filed a lawsuit against Trump's expulsion from the White House. The ban represents a "threat to media freedom and the public's right to independent journalism without government interference," these media houses said in a joint statement.
The goal of the lawsuit is "to defend the principle that the government does not decide what the press reports or publishes." According to information from CNN, MS NOW and "Politica", this is an urgent request. This means that the court must deal with this case quickly.
On Saturday, journalists from all three media outlets were blocked from accessing the grounds of the White House, as reported or reported by these media outlets. How long reporters will no longer be allowed to set foot on the grounds of the White House remains unclear. Trump did not specify a time frame, and even threatened to extend the ban to other media.
On Monday, the US president took an even tougher tone in a post on the Truth Social network. He wrote that the White House is not acting against the free press, which he cares about, but against "fake news", something that has spread in the US "like a cancer". He even talked about threats to national security. Trump repeatedly makes such an argument when issuing legally contested orders. In addition, on Sunday, Trump posted a provocative illustration on his online account Truth Social: three garbage bags with the inscriptions of these three media outlets. Garbage bags are pictured left in front of the White House.
Because of Trump's order, CNN has been removed from the group of TV stations that alternately cover the president and share video with other media outlets, according to its own statements. CNN was actually supposed to follow Trump to New York this Monday - the United Nations General Assembly is taking place this week. Now the remaining four members of the pool have declined to step in instead of CNN.
