The most trophy-winning tennis player sveta Novak Đoković he was defeated on Friday, in the third round Roland Garros. He was defeated by the Brazilian João Fonseca after a big upset in five sets - 4:6, 4:6, 6:3, 7:5, 7:5. Djokovic said after the match that he does not know if he will play next year in Paris.
Djokovic opened the match well at the Philippe Chatriere Stadium and routinely won the first two sets with a score of 6:4. In the third, the physical decline of the Serbian tennis player was seen, which happened the day before to the number one seed Janik Siner. Fonseca took a 3:0 lead and later only brought the set to an end (6:3), in order to celebrate with 7:5 in the fourth and fifth with two breaks won each, thus triumphing with a total score of 3:2. Djokovic had the best chance to win at 4:3 in the fourth set, when he missed two break points.
At the press conference after the match, the thirty-nine-year-old tennis player said that he does not know if he will play next year on the Paris clay.
Causes of the fall
After the match, Djokovic reflected on his physical condition after the second set, about which he said "I ran out of gas after two sets" and added that he would like to be 19 years old.
Djokovic arrived at Roland Garros after a three-month break due to a shoulder injury. Before coming to Paris, he played only one match on clay in Rome. On that topic, he said that he felt good on the court and that he had the impression that he had played all the tournaments on this surface.
There is no doubt that Djokovic was thinking about the good opportunity for the 25th Grand Slam title, which presented itself in Paris. Last year's winner Carlos Alcaraz withdrew before the tournament, and the day before, the first seed Janik Siner, as well as other Grand Slam winners, dropped out. However, on the way to the 25th title, young Fonseka got in the way. With the elimination of the Serbian tennis player, there are no players left at Roland Garros who have won Grand Slam trophies in their previous careers.
He pointed out that it is still necessary for his rivals to work hard in order to beat him in the biggest tournaments.
"That chivalrous thread and fight, that spirit of a wolf that I carry is always present - even if I played on one leg, I will not give victory to anyone. If someone beats me in this way like Fonseca now, I will say all the best, he deserved it, but I will certainly not let go," said Djokovic.
Continuation of the season
Djokovic will surely be overtaken on the ATP list after Roland Garros by Felix Auger-Aliassime, Ben Shelton and Alex de Minor, and if Andrei Rublev, Kasper Rud or Flavio Koboli wins the title, one of the three would also overtake him. Thus, Djokovic will drop from fourth place to seventh, and potentially eighth place.
Djokovic is expected to play at this year's third Grand Slam, Wimbledon, which starts at the end of June. Carlos Alcaraz will not be there again in that tournament. Djokovic has won seven trophies on London grass so far and it is certain that he will be one of the main favorites again.
