Student Faculty of Philosophy in They are not The trial of Veljko Mušanović, who was elbowed in the neck by a gendarme last summer while he was knocked down on the asphalt, began in the Misdemeanor Court. Students and citizens gathered to support him, and his lawyer Jasmina Antonijević says that it is a paradox that he is being tried for a telescopic baton that he kept in his backpack, while the batterers stand next to the policemen holding various tools in their hands, Juzne Vesti writes.
She says that the written defense has already been submitted, and the presentation of evidence is scheduled for today by hearing the gendarmes who filed the report against the student.
"Veljko's case is a reflection of the situation in the state and in the judiciary. We live in a system in which the victim is treated as a defendant or vice versa, depending on whether he belongs to the ruling political party or not. In August of last year, Veljko suffered injuries to his head, neck and broken fingers of his left hand. Proceedings against the persons who did this were not initiated, but misdemeanor proceedings were initiated against Veljko because he carried a bat in a closed backpack, which he did not commit, nor did he report. Article 48 of the Law on Arms and Ammunition. Despite everything, I expect the court to be independent and to make a decision based on the law, which is an acquittal," says lawyer Antonijević.
Antonijević believes that it is absurd that proceedings were not initiated against members of the Gendarmerie on official duty after the blows.
"We have medical documentation that proves that Veljko suffered injuries and we expected proceedings to be initiated ex officio. Both the police and the prosecutors were obliged to initiate the proceedings. Unfortunately, the proceedings were not initiated, although there is also a video where it is clearly seen how police officers inflict injuries on Veljko," she notes.
Veljko is charged with a fine of 20.000 to 150.000 dinars or a prison sentence of up to 60 days.
Let us remind you that in August of last year, during a protest in Nis, near Crveni pevac, the gendarme Veljka hit the back of the head and neck with his elbow, which provoked strong reactions from the public, as well as from former members of the police and criminologists, as well as doctors, who pointed to the excessive use of images and torture, but also to the fact that there could have been permanent nerve damage and serious consequences for the young man's health.
The students of Nis invited the citizens to a support rally tomorrow, from 10:30, in front of the High Court building, where the student Arsen Milosavljević will be tried for allegedly throwing eggs at the mayor of Nis.
