The Ministry of Culture of Serbia bought Paja Jovanović's work "Resting Sentinel" at an auction in London for 170.000 pounds, or about 196.000 euros. The painting from the famous Orientalist cycle will be placed in the collection of the Historical Museum of Serbia
The Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Serbia purchased the artwork Paje Jovanović "The Resting Sentinel" for £170.000 (about €196.000), excluding costs.
Picture measuring 44,5 x 53,5 centimeters, it was purchased through a public auction on April 28 at the Sotheby's auction house in London.
The Government of the Republic of Serbia authorized the Embassy of the Republic of Serbia in Great Britain to purchase a valuable work at a public auction, which has enriched the cultural heritage of our country, and which will be kept by the History Museum of Serbia as part of its art collection.
Let us recall, as Vreme wrote, another similar painting that belongs to Jovanović's Orientalist cycle - Now we are adding to that array of valuables a representative work of one of our greatest "Vacation of Bashibozuk" - Serbia bought it in 2023 for 349.500 euros and is now part of the permanent collection of the Museum of the City of Belgrade.
Selaković: The return of cultural heritage
The Minister of Culture, Nikola Selaković, pointed out that the purchase of this precious painting represents the continuation of a consistent and responsible cultural policy, aimed at the protection, preservation and return of our cultural heritage.
He recalled that in the previous period, the Ministry managed to smuggle into the country a number of valuable cultural assets, such as a silver candlestick from the court of the Obrenović dynasty, a framed photo of Queen Natalija, two Serbian manuscript books "Serbian Octohy" and "The Life of Varlam and Joasaf", then letters from Mileva Marić Einstein and Albert Einstein, then King Milan's cane with binoculars in the handle, then a jug from the princely service, as well as the painting Uroš Predić "Portrait of a girl with a book in an armchair".
"Now, to that series of valuables, we are adding a representative work of one of our greatest painters, Paja Jovanović. It is not a mere coincidence, but a consistent state policy, that we return home the cultural treasures that belong to our people, keep them in our museums and leave them to future generations as a lasting testimony of our identity and history. For all this, we express our special gratitude to the President of the Republic and the Government," said the minister.
The painting that brought Paja Jovanović world fame
Pavle Paja Jovanović (1859 -1957) is the most important Serbian representative of academic realism and one of the most prominent painters of European and Serbian art from the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century.
The painting "The Resting Guard" belongs to his famous Orientalist cycle, which brought the artist world fame.
These and the pictures of other subjects represent an important document of recognition of the Balkans, Serbia and Montenegro, but also the territories that remained under Ottoman administration, as a special area of Europe, in which, in addition to conflicts and differences, there are common characteristics, cultural peculiarities and values.
As a painter who managed to connect the European orientalist genre with the warrior and epic ethos of the Balkans, giving it ethnographic precision and an impression of authenticity, Paja Jovanović managed to raise local Balkan motifs to the level of universal artistic value.
Given that a large part of Paja Jovanović's orientalist oeuvre is in private collections around the world, the Ministry of Culture, by purchasing this painting, enabled the Historical Museum of Serbia, as a republican institution of protection, to complete its fund, according to the announcement.
The art collection of the History Museum of Serbia is continuously developed through purchases and gifts in order to provide a comprehensive view of national history.
Most of Paja Jovanović's works are in the National Museum of Serbia and the Museum of the City of Belgrade, which also includes the Paja Jovanović Legacy.

Vesna Lalić, an excellent photographer, has passed away. She photographed all the most important social and political events in Serbia, as well as seemingly ordinary everyday moments.
"The one who remains stuck in the sphere of traumatic experiences, who constantly thinks that, here, while we are talking about the book, someone is given the wrong diagnosis, someone is sloppily operated on, someone is receiving therapy that they do not need, someone is losing their hair, that person has a problem because living in fear is not life, and psychotherapy is an expensive thing."
There is, literally, no difference between the one who claims it is day in the middle of the night, or the one who claims to be a giraffe, from the claims we read on billboards: that Vučić is working to unify Serbs and that Serbia is doing better and better day by day.
The pre-election arrests due to the alleged "overthrow of the state" testify to the regime's panic. The bad news for them is - they can't arrest the whole people who decided to defend themselves from progressive beatings and election theft
The ring that tightens around Ćaciland Student list is getting narrower. Because there are more and more spoiled people who see the false prophet for what he is: a street obscener who is fighting Serbia
