The novel "Dask" by Uroš Dimitrijević, published by Dom kulture Studentski grad, is the unanimous winner of the 45th Politika Zabavnik Literary Award for a literary work intended for young people in the coming year, written in the Serbian language.
In the explanation of the jury, it is written that "the novel 'Daske' is the story of an ordinary literary hero who skates through his upbringing and a social panorama filled with colorful characters and events, recognizable and suggestive in the micro-cultural and social peculiarities of a specific urban community." At first glance, the unpretentious storytelling opens up spaces of deep emotionality, unadulterated boyish naivety and peculiar openness characteristic of young people. Witty and direct, with language objectified by generational peculiarities but also with local linguistic values, Uroš Dimitrijević has created a novel that is a manifesto of a generation, but also a space of recognition and enjoyment for all those millennials who have not forgotten their youth and sincerity."
Uroš Dimitrijević (1991) is from Nišlija and lives in Paris. His first novel "Siroti mali ratovi" was shortlisted for the Nino Award in 2020. In Belgrade, he was a journalist for Vice Serbia and BBC News in Serbian, and now he works in the comics industry.
He wrote "Daske" in Paris, but about Nis. Earlier, he told "South News" that the book is not autobiographical, although it contains stories from his childhood like, for example, the one about Mijatović's poster: as a kid, he bought it on the day Mijatović hit the famous crossbar, but he was not allowed to stick it up in his room. In the end, his grandmother gave him the wall of her apartment.
The writer Oto Oltvanji said about Dimitrijević's "Boards" that "they are a generational, teenage, melancholic and witty novel that glides like a skate."
48 books were submitted to this year's "Zabavnik" award competition, and the jury shortlisted the following; "Bird Game" by Katarina Obradović, (Klett), "Secrets of Mrs. Mandorla" by Ana Cakić, (Bee), "Rejon 24" by Boris Džinić (Kozaz džavaštvo) and "When things fall apart" by Dragana Mladenović (Creative Center).
The jury included Dr. Snežana Petrović, advisor at the Institute for the Serbian Language SANU, prof. Dr. Irena Špadijer, professor at the Faculty of Philology in Belgrade (president), Petar Arbutina, literary critic, Milorad Milinković, film director, and Petar Milatović on behalf of "Zabavnik".
The award (plaque and monetary amount) will be presented to the winner on February 28, on the birthday of "Politics' Entertainer", in the hall of the National Library of Serbia, where a large exhibition will be opened on the occasion of the 85th anniversary of this iconic magazine in the region.
