The Roman water supply, tombs and sarcophagi from the "Ancient Singidunum" site have been packed and put away safely, to wait for the completion of the construction of the underground garage in Vlajkovićeva Street, in order to be placed in the archeological park
Next week, the construction of the garage in Vlajkovićeva Street should begin, since the Roman water supply, tombs and sarcophagi have been removed from the "Antički Singidunum" site.
The packed parts were placed in wooden boxes and transported to the depot of the Museum of the City of Belgrade, it was confirmed by Novosti in the Secretariat for Culture of the city. After the completion of the works on the garage, part of the water supply system, as well as the Roman tombs, should be returned to the green area above the garage, where the archeological park is planned.
The parking lot is being built as part of a public-private partnership signed for 40 years with Chinese companies and is worth seven million euros.
The underground garage will have four levels and will have 284 parking spaces. It is planned to enter in Vlajkovićeva Street and exit in Kosovska Street, with two traffic lanes each. The entire plateau under which the garage will be located, its roof, will be greened like that of the Old Palace, and part of the park will take the form of a roof garden that will be paved, greened, lit and equipped with furniture.
Preparatory work began on March 1 last year, but was stopped because it was encountered archaeological remains from the Roman period.
In the first layer, the remains of Belgrade from the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century were discovered - houses that perished in the Allied bombing in the Second World War. Then artifacts corresponding to the 16th and 17th centuries were found, and when the archaeologists reached a depth of three meters, a part of the Roman necropolis was discovered. 14 Roman tombs from the third and fourth centuries and parts of the waterworks built in the second century were found. Sixty meters of water pipes were unearthed in that area.
At the beginning of February, the relocation of the found water pipe began, with the help of the conservators of the City Museum. It is cut with special machines and then secured with nylon. In the space where the water once flowed, insulation was placed, i.e. styrofoam and pur-foam as a buffer zone, special sponge material and sheet metal. The pipeline was cut meter by meter, then it was secured with a steel plate, on which chains were later attached, with the help of which it was transferred to a wooden pallet.
When the garage is finished, the waterworks will be part of the archaeo-park.
