Enhanced controls traffic police reveal a high level of disobedience among drivers, while statistics on the number of accidents, injuries and deaths indicate a worrying state of the roads.
In the first four months of 2026, 120 people died on the roads, and the action of increased traffic control during the May Day holidays showed that more than half of the drivers do not follow the rules.
Members of the traffic police controlled 42.251 vehicles and discovered 24.359 violations during the increased traffic control that was carried out from April 30 to May 3, the MUP announced.
As many as 57 percent of controlled drivers were in violation, and the largest number, a total of 16.228, were sanctioned for speeding, of which 1.900 were sanctioned for speeding in the pedestrian crossing zone.
1.239 drivers were excluded from traffic for driving under the influence of alcohol, while 35 drivers were detained for driving under the influence of psychoactive substances, it was announced.

New law for safer driving?

The head of the Traffic Police Administration, Slaviša Lakićević, said earlier this year, commenting on last year's data, that in addition to the large number of serious traffic accidents that attracted public attention, the number of fatalities was 21 fewer than in 2024.
He announced the adoption of the new Law on Traffic Safety in mid-2026.
Violent driving is the main cause of accidents
Improper speed, improper behavior of road users, use of mobile phones - these are just some of the most common causes of traffic accidents.
Reckless driving is responsible for almost 60 percent of the most serious accidents: improper speed contributes to about 44 percent of all fatal accidents, while alcohol contributes to about 14 percent.
Violent, i.e. arrogant driving is defined as driving over the speed limit in a residential area by more than 90 kilometers per hour, passing through a red light in a short interval, and driving with more than two per thousand of alcohol in the blood.
The data published by the Traffic Safety Agency in December 2025 unequivocally show that Serbia had the worst result in Europe in terms of the number of traffic fatalities up to that moment - 78 per million inhabitants. The European average is 44 deaths per million inhabitants, and in the Scandinavian countries from 16 to 20 deaths per million inhabitants.
