Today, a protest was held in front of the "Yugoslavia" hotel due to the announcement of the demolition of this architecturally and historically significant building and the construction of another megalomaniacal residential and business complex in its place. The participants said that the development of Belgrade must not be dictated by investors, but that it must be guided by the interests of the citizens of Belgrade.
Representative of the Zemun board Green-Left Front (ZLF) Marko Vujacic said that today they gathered in front Hotel "Yugoslavia" because there is a plan to build another megalomaniacal complex with two towers of 155 meters each, and he pointed out that the citizens will not allow it.
"When such 155-meter culverts are built, it leads to the usurpation of public space, to the reduction of green areas, to the fact that people here will not be able to ride bicycles, to walk, they will not have contact with the river and the shore, they will destroy our natural bird habitats." That happens when there is usurpation of public interest," Vujacic pointed out.
He also warned that retail prices and real estate prices in that part of the city will start to rise, which will force a part of the population to move out, which would break the social and social structure.
Vujacic assessed that such a project is unsustainable in the medium and long term because the existing infrastructure will not be able to support the new 2000 residents and another 1500 people who will work there. He says that the city government does not take care of that, but only about satisfying the needs of investors and their companions.
And in addition to everything else, the "Yugoslavia" hotel has a "distinct cultural and emotional value" for residents of that part of the city.
Historical, artistic and architectural value
Art historian Marko Bogdanović said that the "Yugoslavia" hotel has not only historical, artistic and architectural value, but that it is the last large building in Belgrade and Serbia that bears the name of Yugoslavia.
Smaller in dimensions, but big in importance, there is only the "Yugoslav Drama Theater".
"Whatever opinion we have about that Yugoslavia, we have to preserve the name 'Yugoslavia'," said Bogdanović and added that this struggle is necessary "not only because of some Yugoslav nostalgic idea, but because we are part of that history and we must not erase it." .
"Let's save Yugoslavia, let's save the hotel 'Yugoslavia', let's save the memory of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, of SFR Yugoslavia." It is part of our history," said Bogdanović.
During the protest, the citizens blocked the road in front of the hotel for five minutes, shouted "Yugoslavia, Yugoslavia", carried banners with the words "Fight for the South", "We won't be kulčine", "I don't give youth, I don't give the South". Find the hotel's friend".
The protest, which was organized by the ZLF, was also attended by other members of the coalition with the working title "I choose the fight", which is going to the Belgrade elections on June 2. At the stands, the protest participants signed objections to the Detailed Regulation Plan, which the ZLF will submit to the city's Secretariat for Urban Planning.
Hotel "Yugoslavia", it was stated in the call to protest, was bought in March of this year by the company "MV Invest", which is owned by the "Millennium Team", and which last year initiated the amendment of the Detailed Regulation Plan for the area where it is located hotel.
