Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić boarded the train to Subotica on Friday. During the drive, he announced that the new high-speed railway Novi Sad - Subotica will start operating on October 8, and the journey from Belgrade to Subotica will take just over an hour.
The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, said that he would soon railway Novi Sad - Subotica will be opened to traffic for commercial use on Wednesday, October 8.
The ride will be free for the first few days, and then the price of a return ticket from Belgrade to Subotica will be 2.000 dinars.
Vučić, while driving to Subotica from Belgrade, on the high-speed train "Soko", and on the occasion of the commissioning of the railway from Novi Sad to Subotica, he said that it is incredible that it will take 70 to 72 minutes to drive from the capital of Serbia to Subotica.
"Now it is exactly 11:35 a.m., and we need 70 to 72 minutes. Unbelievable," said Vučić.
As he explained, in order for everything to be in accordance with the law, it is necessary to pass five days from today, so that the railway can be put into traffic.
The train arrived today 10 minutes faster than the president originally said - the journey took 62 minutes.
The train will start running regularly on October 8, and the ride will be free for the first few days, Vučić said.
"We will put it into circulation on Wednesday at noon. There must be a break of five days for unknown reasons. That's how it should be according to the law," said Vučić.
As he stated, the income from traveling by train is growing, and every kilometer of the railway increases the price.
Vučić stated that there are enough investments in railways and the subsidies that railways receive.
"We are not able to earn money, not even close to that. And I believe that, in the coming period, we will develop railway traffic to Montenegro, to Bar," said the president.
Vučić said that the construction of railways in Serbia began in 1854 and reminded that at that time horse-drawn carriages drove trains.

"The construction of the entire network of high-speed railways is important for Serbia"
"In 1956, there were already several horse-drawn carriages, but we did not have the necessary ones," he said.
During the conversation with the Chinese ambassador Li Ming, Vučić said that the construction of only one or two important railways, but the entire network, is of the greatest importance for Serbia.
"There is not always a need to build high-speed railways, but regular railways. And we should work on that," said Vučić.
As he added, they are now working on securing enough money for the construction and reconstruction of several railways, among which are the railways between Pančevo, Opovo, Zrenjanin, then Kikinda, Subotica, Sombor and reconnecting with Vrbas.
"That would be of the utmost importance for all of us," said Vučić.
