There was no terrorism or sabotage
Professor Sanja Fritz of the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Belgrade stated that, after reviewing more than 20.000 documents from the documentation that was partially made available to the public and 600.000 pages, she can confirm with great certainty that on November 1, the canopy of the Railway Station in Novi Sad did not fall as the last act of terrorism or sabotage.
"If we talk about the construction aspect, the canopy fell due to the loss of its load-bearing capacity. The loss of its load-bearing capacity occurred primarily, but not exclusively, due to corrosion in the steel wires that were in the tensioners that hung the canopy on the roof structure," said Fritz.
She said that it was just the last straw that had been filled for years with corruption and fraud in the construction industry, disrespect and avoidance of procedures defined by law, constant changes to laws and regulations without respecting the opinions of the profession and lex specialists that were brought for all projects of importance to Serbia, which degrade procedures and speed them up.
"The glass was filled with the interference of individuals in the realization of projects, even though they have no formal competence in them. It was filled with poor management and management of projects, it was filled with the politicization of the Serbian Chamber of Engineers and constant pressure on the engineering profession," said Fritz.
She stated that on November 1 last year, people died at the construction site and pointed out that the failure of an engineer may have partially contributed to the fall of the canopy, but she asked where the people at the construction site came from and who let them there, adding that it was not the engineers.
