Student the rebellion in Serbia has been going on for more than six months, and from Warsaw, the capital Poland, looks at the student rebellion with great hope Adam Mihnjik, the main and responsible official daily newspaper "Gazeta Viborča" and writer.
"It is an idea of a different Serbia. It may not be political, but it is certainly cultural, civilizational. And that is the future of Serbia. A good future," says Mihnjik in an interview for "Vreme" from a cabinet full of books, newspapers, caricatures of world intellectuals and politicians.
Commenting on the situation in Serbia, Mihnjik in an interview for the new issue of "Vremena", which is on newsstands from Thursday, May 29, says that in Serbia there has always been a tradition of something remaining independent.
"The Serbian intelligentsia was very freedom-loving. Of course, that part that was democratic. I knew those people. You could talk to them normally. But of course, first there was Milosevic, now Vučić."
About prison days
He himself spent a number of years in prison as a fairly well-known dissident in student circles, and when he got out, he was a respected European intellectual.
"For me, prison was something different than for my colleagues. I spent a lot of time in prison. I read a lot, wrote a lot. I wrote four books in prison. I wrote for Le Monde, the press in Yugoslavia published me. I was quoted by great people of the world. My mentor, my older friend, said: 'For Adam, prison is the best place. There is no vodka, no girls, no phones there,'" says Mihnjik.
How are the best newspapers in Europe made?
His newspaper "Gazete Viborče" is considered the best newspaper in Europe, and Mihnjik says that everything started from the fact that it was necessary to create a good, honest newspaper, which will defend the same values defended during the dictatorship.
"I'm a boring person, I've been saying and writing more or less the same thing for 40 years. The world is changing, but the basic answers are still based on the European idea of freedom, truth. And, of course, tolerance. Respect for diversity, pluralism. That's the kind of newspaper we try to create - open to the world. That's why governments have a problem with us. What can I say? We are still the most important and influential daily newspaper in our region. There is no such paper in Russia, nor in Ukraine, nor in the Czech Republic, nor in We are the only ones who have succeeded in Hungary.
And what is the future of newspapers, especially printed editions, considering the digital world and digital newspapers?
"We'll see what fate brings. It used to seem that the theater would disappear when the cinema appeared. And when the television appeared - that the cinema would disappear. And all of that still exists and lives together. Of course, the Internet has posed completely new questions to the media world. I can't say what will happen, but I can see what has already changed before my eyes. Artificial intelligence. For now, I know one thing. We do what we have to - so let it be," says Mihnjik.
