Higher public prosecution in the answer to Insider stated that the investigation did not confirm the suspicions from the preliminary investigation that the head of the Belgrade police, Veselin Milić, called Aleksandar Nešović to come to the restaurant "27" in Senjak without personal security in order to smooth over differences with Saša Vuković Bosket, now suspected of murdering Nešović. The prosecution made this claim in a statement dated May 16. This is not the only claim that the Prosecution has given up in the meantime.
After the Higher Public Prosecutor's Office in Belgrade announced that the custody of two police officers from Veselin Milić's security was terminated, as it was established through base stations and video surveillance that they could not have been in department "27" at the time of the murder of Aleksandar Nešović, the same conclusion was reached for the head of the Belgrade police, Veselin Milić, who has since been dismissed. However, Milić was kept in custody due to the suspicion that he knew that the crime had taken place without reporting it in accordance with the rules of the service. Yesterday, the Prosecutor's Office requested an extension of custody for another 30 days for Milić and other suspects.
The confusion and contradictions introduced by the announcements of the High Public Prosecutor's Office left a lot unsaid, and one detail could be particularly important.
Namely, the Higher Public Prosecutor's Office in Belgrade stated in a statement dated May 16, 2026 that the injured party AN first called Veselin M. by phone, who, as was suspected, was in the company of Saša V. and Marija S. and suggested that he come to the said restaurant to discuss their differences, suggesting that he not come accompanied by his security.
Milić was indisputably in the restaurant "27" that evening, but the prosecution dropped the part of the charges charging him with helping the perpetrator to cover up after the crime was committed. According to the Prosecutor's Office, based on base stations and video surveillance footage, it was established that Milić left the restaurant with security just before Nešović returned to the location where he was later killed, Insider writes.

Unclear questions
It remains unclear what the head of the largest police department in the country was doing in the restaurant in the company of people from the criminal milieu, what kind of relationship he has with them and what his role was in the evening when the murder took place.
That's why Insider journalists sent the following questions to the Higher Public Prosecutor's Office:
- Did VJT at the time of publication of the aforementioned statement have evidence that would support such allegations?
- Do these statements of VJT still place the burden on the suspect Veselin Milić?
We publish the answer of the Higher Public Prosecutor's Office in Belgrade to these questions in full:
"Regarding your questions, we point out that the announcement of May 16, 2026 was based on the data and facts that were available at that time, taking into account all the circumstances of the case and the filed criminal complaint, which during the investigation, based on the collected material evidence and witness statements, turned out to be incorrect in the description of certain actions and in relation to certain persons.
In particular, we would like to point out that statements made by persons in the police capacity as citizens during the pre-investigation procedure according to the provisions of the Code of Criminal Procedure are not considered evidence, but only statements made before the public prosecutor's office during questioning as witnesses, i.e. hearing as suspects, are considered evidence.
This means that the prosecution did not have "evidence" at the time of writing the aforementioned press release whether Veselin Milić called Aleksandar Nešović from his phone or addressed him from someone else's phone, nor whether he told him to come alone or not.
Most of the witnesses questioned about that circumstance during the investigation who had direct communication with the victim before he went to the restaurant, including the wife of the victim, but also the witnesses who were in the presence of Milić during his stay in the restaurant, did not state that Milić called the victim to come to the bar without security.

On the contrary, during the investigation, it was undisputedly established that Veselin M. was not present in the premises at the time of the commission of the crime of Felony Murder, nor that he was removing traces of the commission of the crime, which is why the criminal complaint in that part was dismissed, and in connection with the crime of Assisting the perpetrator after the crime was committed.
We emphasize that the factual situation is still being established and material evidence is being collected, including all ordered expert reports, some of which have not yet been completed and submitted to the prosecution.
In accordance with all the collected evidence, the analysis that will follow will determine the factual situation, the description of the actions and the qualifications of the criminal offense for each of the suspects, after which the appropriate public prosecutor's decision will be made," the response of the Higher Public Prosecutor's Office to Insider states.
