Due to the suspicion that as organizers and members of the "Balkan Cartel" criminal group, they were smuggling cocaine at the international level, a total of eight people were arrested in Belgrade, Niš, Novi Sad and Sremska Mitrovica.
Prosecution for organized crime stated that the arrests were made by members of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Criminal Police Directorate, with the coordination of Europol.
The joint multi-month investigation was in cooperation with the police of Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The following were arrested: D. M, BP, MP, BV, NB, DN, IC and D.Đ, suspected of having committed the criminal offense of unauthorized production and marketing of narcotics from October 26, 2019 to March 19, 2021 drugs and association to commit criminal acts.
It was also stated that a person with the initials SJ, a citizen of Serbia, was arrested in Ecuador.
At the same time, Z.Š was arrested in Bosnia and Herzegovina, while in Croatia a member of an organized criminal group is serving a prison sentence for another criminal offense.
"A search has been launched for the organizers of this group, VM and UK, while ML, MJ and AI, who were deprived of their liberty in May 2023, are already in the detention units of the Special Department of the High Court in Belgrade," stated the Prosecutor's Office for Organized Crime.
During the search of the suspects' apartments, weapons and a large amount of ammunition were found, and several expensive vehicles, watches, and large amounts of money were also seized.
In cooperation with Europol and the police of Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia managed to identify the organizers and members of an organized criminal group on its territory, which is suspected to be behind shipments of several tons of cocaine that arrived in Europe from Ecuador and Brazil.
"Also, this group is brought in connection with the seizure in the Port of Ploče in Croatia, where 504 packages of cocaine, with a total weight of 505,5 kg, were found and confiscated in the floor structures of a container transported from Ecuador in March 2021," it is stated.
