Croatian MEP and rapporteur of the European Parliament for Serbia Tonino Picula he judged that the way it is Ratko Mladic buried another indicator of the policy led by official Belgrade.
He said this during a debate in the European Parliament devoted to the glorification of a war criminal.
Picula stated that he is the president of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić Mladić saw off with state honors, while at the same time with Vojislav Šešelj agreed on a pre-election alliance.
"Vučić sent off one war criminal with state honors, and arranged a pre-election alliance with another, Seselj," Picula said.
According to his opinion, Mladić's funeral is not only a matter of attitude towards the wars and crimes of the 1990s, but also an indicator of the direction in which the current government is leading Serbia today.
He reminded that the International Criminal Tribunal in The Hague convicted Mladić of genocide and war crimes, which is why, as he pointed out, the manner in which he was sent away should not be kept silent.
Picula also assessed that the European Union must oppose historical revisionism and the relativization of war crimes. According to him, if the government in Serbia continues to lead a policy that he described as wandering, the EU should not be indecisive in its attitude towards such a government.
He believes that Brussels must not ignore the facts which, in his opinion, show that Serbia under Vučić does not meet the conditions for membership in the European Union. Picula added that Mladić's death did not disappear the ideas he associates with the Greater Serbia project, that is, the concept of the so-called "Serbian world".
Because of all this, the member of the European parliament assessed that it is justified to ask the question whether Serbia, while it is led by the current government, should continue negotiations on membership in the European Union.
Ahead of the discussion, the European People's Party (EPP), whose affiliated member is the Serbian Progressive Party, also spoke out. The EPP condemned the presence of high-ranking Serbian officials at Ratko Mladić's funeral.
