Republic Election Commission (REK) unanimously declared the electoral list "Student List - Students Win". All 19 present members of the Commission voted for its announcement.
The student list will thus appear in the elections under the number 3.
This turned out to be particularly convenient, because in the Serbian tradition the number three has a strong symbolic and ritual role. Its meaning is mostly positive and related to wholeness, confirmation, happiness, protection and togetherness.
First of all, there are the famous "three fingers", which became a recognizable sign of Serbian identity in the 1990s. In line with this is the famous proverb "Three times God helps", which suggests that what did not work on the first attempt, can succeed on the third.
Then, for good luck, knock on a tree three times, and Serbian fairy tales are full of heroes who often get three tasks or face three obstacles, and the matter is often solved on the third attempt. It is part of a wider Indo-European pattern, but it is also very present in the Serbian tradition.
Of course, there is another famous proverb - "third time lucky", in that manner is also the advice that everyone in Serbia knows - "measure three times, cut once".
More than 69.000 valid signatures
The session of the REC started at 8:25 p.m., and the members of the Commission also adopted a decision on the appointment of a member and his deputy in the extended composition of the REC, on the proposal of the list submitter.
At the beginning of the session, RIK member Marija Jovanović announced that after the check, 69.099 legally valid signatures of voter support were found, N1 reported.
According to her, the electoral list also meets the legal requirements regarding the representation of the sexes, while all prescribed documentation, which was assessed as legally valid, was submitted with it.
The student movement submitted the signatures for the candidacy list of the citizens' group "Student list - Students are winning" to the RIK the previous evening, after the signatures were collected all over Serbia during the weekend. In some places, citizens waited for more than six hours to sign.
A large number of supporters of the student movement also gathered in Belgrade during the handover of signatures. The Archive of Public Meetings estimated that at 5:50 p.m. there were about 6.000 people in front of the Rectorate, while according to their data, there were about 8.700 citizens in the column moving towards the RIK. Trumpeters welcomed the students in front of the Commission building.
After the list was announced, students also published a list of 250 candidates for the National Assembly. They stated that it was created through more than a year of plenums, blockades, discussions and joint decision-making. The first candidate on the list is Dr. Ilija Srdanović.
