Students which block Faculty of Medicine in Niš on Saturday, they condemned the actions of Dean Aleksandar Mitić, stating that instead of being an ally and protector of his students, he decided to call the police against them.
The students stated that it was "an act of betrayal of the academic community and the values that should define it," according to a statement published on the Instagram profile of medfakni_blokada.
They recalled that on April 9, at the Faculty of Medicine's plenum of students, convened on the occasion of a unilateral decision by the faculty administration to transfer classes to an online format without prior consultation, it was decided to allow entry into the faculty building only to students in the blockade.
On the very next day, the attempt of non-teaching staff to enter the premises of the faculty was in direct opposition to the decision of the plenum, and on that occasion the students drew attention to the adopted measure and asked them to leave the premises.
However, according to the students, the dean characterized that peaceful act of civil disobedience as a disturbance of public order and peace and called the police, and as a result, more than 20 plainclothes police officers were sent to the faculty, who identified the students and invited them to an informative interview at the station.
According to the policemen, they were acting on the call of the dean, it was stated in the announcement.
32 students and two full-time professors of the Faculty of Medicine were invited to the informative interview, and the alleged reason was to collect statements from those who were present at the faculty in the morning classes.
Given that the police had no information about their identity, the calls were distributed randomly, which clearly shows, as the students judge, that it is a pure act of intimidation and pressure.
"All students and professors were released after giving their statements, but the consequences of such behavior are deep and long-term," Niš students said in a statement.
