Ministry of Environmental Protection of the Republic of Serbia published an official notice on the project of modernization and construction of the two-track high-speed railway on Corridor 10 through North Macedonia.
The notice was delivered to Serbia in accordance with the international ESPOO convention on environmental impact assessment in a cross-border context, because the works begin on the border of the two countries at the Tabanovce crossing.
The modernization of the Macedonian section is important because of the high-speed railway between Belgrade and Athens. In this way, both passenger traffic and the transport of goods from the Greek ports of Thessaloniki and Piraeus will be accelerated.
The new infrastructure is designed for speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour in passenger traffic and around 120 kilometers per hour in freight traffic. 19 new tunnels will also be built, because the old ones do not meet European standards due to their sharp curves.
The modernization of the Macedonian part of Corridor 10 is directly related to the projects implemented in Serbia. Documentation for the construction of a double-track railway for speeds of up to 200 kilometers per hour is being prepared for the Belgrade-Nis section, while work on the Nis-Brestovac section is already underway. Design and technical documentation is being prepared for the part of the railway from Brestovac to Preševo.
Serbia and North Macedonia previously signed a Memorandum of Cooperation in order to ensure a smooth connection of the railway infrastructure at the border.
It is estimated that the railway from Serbia to Greek could be finished by 2031.
