In just seven days in three Croatia of the city, three separate ones were recorded incident in which the targets were citizens of Serbian nationality.
The last in the series happened on Saturday, when, according to the media, a physical attack on a group of karate fighters from Serbia who participated in an international tournament in Rijeka was prevented.
According to the testimonies of those present, a group of young men tried to enter the sports hall where the competitions were held, shouting "Serbs on the willows" and other offensive slogans. The police reacted quickly and prevented more serious violence, but the event reopened the issue of the security and position of Serbs in Croatia.
This is the third incident in just one week. They are earlier students from Subotica were attacked in Split who participated in the cultural exchange event, while in Karlovac, unknown persons broke the windows of a car with Serbian license plates.
The Serbian National Council (SNV) warned that "the pattern of seasonal tensions is repeating itself", which appears every year during sports and cultural events in which Serbs from the region participate. "Nationalist outbursts are not isolated incidents, but a symptom of a society that has not come to terms with the legacy of the 1990s," SNV said.
The Croatian Ministry of the Interior condemned the incidents, stating that the police are "working intensively to identify the perpetrators".
In Serbia, the incidents caused a series of reactions — from demands for a diplomatic protest to calls for calm. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Serbia announced that it "expects the Croatian authorities to provide security for all citizens, regardless of nationality."
Although tensions between the two countries have been relatively low in recent months, a new series of attacks could strain relations again, especially in the context of rising nationalist rhetoric on both sides of the border.
