The students in the blockade have announced that they will stop blockade Radio-television of Serbia if a decision is made at the session of the Committee for Culture and Information of the Assembly of Serbia to announce a competition for members Council of the Regulatory Agency for Electronic Media (REM), which is one of their key demands for which they blocked the public service.
They said in the show "Impression of the Week" that - if such a decision is made tomorrow - they will retire to their faculties, but they will "continue to monitor" what will happen next.
The blockade of public service buildings in Takovska and Kosutnjak has been going on for two weeks.
We started the blockade almost two weeks ago with the aim of announcing a new competition for members of the REM Council, and in the meantime we were targeted on televisions with a national frequency and we are just getting to the point that REM should monitor those media, said veterinary student Katarina Jeftić.
If the decision is made - and we hope it will - we will all pack up and return to our faculties, she said.
This was also confirmed by her colleagues - guests of the show, emphasizing that it "will only be the first step" and that they will monitor how the situation will develop further, because the citizens who support the student movement and the blockade of RTS realized that "both RTS and REP belong to them".
This is not the first blockade of RTS, there have been some before and we have repeatedly pointed out the problems of public service reporting. We will closely monitor the progress of the following process, and as we gathered now - we can gather again, said Zoe Gavrilović, a student of the Faculty of Law in Belgrade.
Session at 15 p.m.
As a reminder, the session of the Committee of the Serbian Parliament for Culture and Information, whose agenda includes the initiation of a new procedure for the selection of members of the Council of the Regulatory Body for Electronic Media (REM), will be held at 15 p.m.
The first item on the agenda is the repeal of the previous procedure for nominating candidates for the election of REM Council members from November 2024, and the second item is the initiation of a new procedure for nominating candidates.
The request to hold the session was submitted by opposition MPs, members of that Committee, after several days of student protests blocking the buildings of the Radio and Television of Serbia (RTS) in Belgrade.
Students have been blocking RTS since Monday, April 14, demanding the announcement of a new competition for REM Council members, which affected the program schedule of the public media service.
