The Office of the Chief Urbanist of the City of Belgrade and the Urban Institute of Belgrade have announced an urban-architectural competition for the conceptual solution of a zoo within an amusement park. on Ada Ciganlija.
The subject of the Competition includes the spatial and programmatic solution of the amusement and recreational park, within which the location of the new Belgrade Zoo is elaborated in more detail. The new economy.
In addition to the already announced relocation of the zoo from the existing location on Kalemegdan to the area around Ada safari, the new address on Ada Ciganlija will offer visitors, judging by the text of the competition, additional contents for entertainment and recreation.
The hotly developed construction area, which will be occupied by an amusement park and a zoo, will be 6.200 square meters.
What will everything look like?
The amusement and recreation park with the zoo and the Ada safari lake will represent a comprehensive recreational space, according to the text of the competition. He adds that the lake as a natural element will serve as a link between the two entities, providing opportunities for water activities, such as boating or fishing.
The park, on an area of 28,29 hectares, will include open and thermal swimming pools with a spa center, areas for excursions, children's playgrounds, smaller catering facilities, outdoor exhibitions, slides of different sizes and categories (roller coasters), a large-diameter Ferris wheel from which looks at the surrounding area, carousel, merry-go-round, small trains with specially made tunnels and stations...
Currently, on the site planned for a zoo and amusement park, there are Ada Safari Lake, Dino Park, ski track with ski lift, tubing and ski simulator, central sports fields - four handball courts, two basketball courts, two volleyball courts, two basketball courts 3 by 3, and the only Center for people with disabilities in the territory of Belgrade
As stated in the tender documentation, the sports field with accompanying content for people with disabilities is retained. A ground-floor religious building (chapel) with a maximum area of 50 square meters is also planned in that zone, while the existing residential buildings in the "Partizan" settlement are planned for demolition.
The zoo itself, as stated, will have a space for housing animals of a total of 13.654 square meters (exterior and interior).
Designers are suggested to reconsider the possibility of grouping animals in the new zoo according to continents, which can contribute to the education of visitors.
For access to the planned contents, a motor vehicle for tourists or another form of ecological transportation is planned. The plan also includes the construction of a two-story above-ground garage with 2.580 parking spaces, as well as a pier for domestic traffic and a marina in the Čukarica backwater.
A new sewage pumping station will be built next to the existing KCS "Čukarica".
The total prize fund in the competition of the city government amounts to 10,5 million dinars, and the deadline for submission of competition works is January 27, 2025.
Šapić: Ada is the best location for a zoo
The mayor of Belgrade announced the relocation of the Belgrade animal oasis at the beginning of 2023.
"Because of the conditions in which the animals are in the current zoo, and above all because of our greatest cultural and historical asset, the Belgrade Fortress, for which we could not submit a request to be protected by the UNESCO list, we decided to move the zoo." There have been attempts so far to have him transferred to another location. Vuk Bojović, the long-time and perhaps the most famous director of the zoo, had this idea in the first place," said Šapić at the time.
Bojović wanted to transfer the garden to Veliko Ratno Island, for which there was a project, but it turned out to be impossible due to frequent flooding. There were ideas that it should be moved to the outskirts of the city in Surčin, Krnjač, but we felt that this was not a good proposal and that the zoo should be an integral part of the city environment.
"And that's why we decided to make it Ada Safari." In this way, the zoo would be close to the city and visitors, and the animals would be in nature, in peace and quiet, where there are many trees, a lake and two rivers," said Šapić and added that the zoo, which is now on seven hectares, will extend to 14 in the future.
Šapić said that the plan should contain everything necessary to protect the future zoo from possible floods. The last flood that threatened the "Partizan" settlement occurred in 2006.
In June 2016, the Detailed Regulation Plan of Ada Ciganlija was adopted, which provided for the construction of a recreational park with a spa center, swimming pools, and tennis courts on the site of the "Partizan" settlement.
