Two employees of the Embassy of Israel, a man and a woman, were killed in a shooting that took place in front of the Jewish Museum in Washington. The suspect was arrested, sources from the security services said. US President Donald Trump said that it is about antisemitism and that the hatred must stop.
Israeli embassy spokesman Tal Naim Cohen confirmed that two officials were shot while attending a Jewish event at the museum, writes ABC News.
He added that the embassy "has full confidence in the competent authorities" in the US and called for a quick investigation. The executive director of the American Jewish Committee, Ted Deutsch, said the committee organized the event at the museum and expressed regret for the violence.
How the murders happened
Members of the security service familiar with the details of the incident said that a man walking in front of the Museum opened fire and hit a man and a woman. The shooting happened near the FBI office in Washington, and the FBI immediately dispatched a team to the scene.
US Attorney Pam Bondi visited the crime scene. According to NBC News, the suspect shouted "Free Palestine".
Israel's ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, called the incident "anti-Semitic terrorism", while Homeland Security Minister Christy Noem promised that the perpetrator would be held accountable.
Sources told the ABC that police are questioning persons of security interest.
Trump: The hate must stop
The President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, said that hatred and radicalism have no place in the United States.
Trump condemned the attack on social media, stressing that the killings were clearly motivated by anti-Semitism.
"These horrific murders in Washington, which are clearly based on anti-Semitism, must stop, now! Hate and radicalism have no place in the US. Condolences to the families of the victims. It is sad that such things can happen. God bless you all," Trump wrote, Reuters reported.
