The police of the capital of Latvia published a statement in response to posts on social networks and writings of some media, including "time" that the fans basketball teams Serbia had problems in Riga due to chanting "pump" in the stands and there were even physical fights.
"To date, the police in Riga have recorded one incident that occurred between Serbian fans, which was related to fan shouts during the game. The individuals who participated in the incident were identified on the spot and their personal data was taken. An investigation has been launched into this case," the Riga police statement stated.
It was pointed out that no other similar incidents have been registered and that the European Basketball Championship in Riga, as a whole, has been held so far without major problems.
"Regarding the behavior of the fans, including the mentioned fans from Serbia, we cannot say that anyone stood out with bad behavior. The state police, in cooperation with other competent authorities, monitors the situation all the time, the police officers are visible to everyone on the spot and monitor the events in the halls," the statement said.
Riga Police adds that it is in constant contact with colleagues from other countries.
"If any violations of the law are observed, we urge people to immediately report them to the police by calling 112 or by contacting a police officer on the spot," Riga police said in a statement.
"Five Cats in Riga"
The news about SNS players at the European Basketball Championship was confirmed by doctoral student Bogdan Raonic, who wrote on the X network that he was intercepted by a group in Riga.
"I was just intercepted by a group of five girls in Riga, in the arena, and threatened to stop shouting pump. If something happens to me, you know who it's from."
This is what Bogdan Raonic, a young man from Kragujevac, who is on postgraduate studies in Switzerland, tweeted before the match between Serbia and the Czech Republic in Riga. He left Serbia a few years ago as an extraordinary talent for physics and mathematics, and graduated as a student of his generation at the prestigious Faculty of Polytechnic Sciences in Paris. The media and disaffected citizens remember him as a student from Šumadija who was arrested during a protest in his hometown in 2020, spent two days in custody and was treated like a hooligan, because he and several other friends found themselves near the place where the police were chasing the protesters.
On the social network X, he wrote about the movement "Kreni-Promeni" in Riga.
What people in Riga say
The editors of "Vremena" spoke to several people who have been in Riga since the beginning of the European Basketball Championship. They say that they sporadically noticed some guys, both in front and in the Arena at the first two games, who looked like SNS beaters. They were not seen again during the third game.
"The Arena itself is quite well secured, at least it seems so to me," says the "Vremena" interlocutor who came with her boyfriend to follow Serbia's matches in the group. "We saw some of our strange guys outside the Arena, but not in the immediate vicinity, but by the cafe where our music is played. They were acting a bit strange and frowning."
Move-Change: The Prosecutor's Office should react immediately
The Kreni-Promeni movement assessed that the prosecutor's office and the police must immediately react to the attack by the clubmen, who were sent by the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) to Latvia to persecute Serbian fans.
In a statement, the movement asks the Minister of the Interior Ivica Dačić and the Director of Police Dragan Vasiljević whether the police had operational knowledge that a group of 150 people with a security license, which they would have to lose, were going abroad to commit crimes against Serbian citizens.
Kreni-Promeni, as stated, announced on August 29 that the SNS had sent paramilitary formations from the security companies "T&M" of Vladimir Mandić and "Sectra".
The announcement adds that Serbian citizen Bogdan Raonic, a doctoral student at one of the world's most prestigious universities, was attacked during yesterday's match.
In a way, the conflict that occurred illustrates the clash of two visions. One is Ćaci's vision of hooligans, persons with a criminal past and companies that get jobs through corruption, and the other is a Serbia of world-educated and recognized young people, who truly love their country, they emphasize in the Move-Change movement.
