The High Court in Novi Sad rejected the demands of the defendants and their defense attorneys and the investigative case regarding the fall of the canopy on Railway station in Novi Sad returned to the High Prosecutor's Office in that city, High Court Insider was told.
Thus, the obstacles for the prosecution to continue the investigation into the fall of the canopy were removed.
The higher prosecutor's office in Novi Sad is On June 18, it announced that it was disabled to complete the investigative procedure because the investigative case is in court.
They specified in the statement that the investigative case was submitted to the court after April 29, when the examination of the commission of experts was interrupted after the defense presented several procedural proposals. The proposals referred to the extraction of certain evidence from the case, but also to the undertaking of certain evidentiary actions.
As the court is competent to decide on these proposals, the prosecution forwarded the investigation case to them.
Since the court did not return the case to them until the publication of the announcement, despite the letter that was sent in the meantime, "The Higher Public Prosecutor's Office in Novi Sad is therefore currently unable to complete the investigation and bring charges against the persons responsible for the tragic event," reads the announcement published on June 18, 2025.
Response of the High Court
A day later, the High Court rejects the "incorrect conclusions of the public that the court is obstructing the conduct of the investigation".
"We believe that such announcements are aimed at undermining citizens' trust in the work of the High Court in Novi Sad," the announcement reads.
Thirteen suspects have a large number of defense attorneys and each of them has submitted a large number of requests and proposals on which the court decides, the statement explains.
The disturbance was also represented by the "illegal blockade for a full two weeks" which made work impossible, according to the court.
Three weeks after the exchange of those statements, on July 4 this year, the court decided on the defense's requests, rejecting them all, after which the case was returned to the prosecution, according to Insider.
