The application of C (Entry/Exit System - EES), introduced by the European Union, begins on October 12.
It applies to all non-Schengen citizens.
For citizens of Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia and Albania, this means that upon first entry into Schengen, they will have to submit their passport and biometric data, including fingerprints and a photo of their face. After the initial entry, during subsequent border crossings the officers will only check the data in the system, which significantly speeds up the process.
A centralized database allows all member countries to monitor the movement of travelers in real time, making it easier to identify those who try to use fake passports or overstay.
Biometric data and centralized records enable faster identification, better control of entry and exit, as well as prevention of illegal stays.
For the citizens of Serbia and the region, the introduction of EES means that the first entry into Schengen will be more formal due to the collection of biometric data, while subsequent crossings will be faster.
Travelers should be prepared for a possible longer wait at the first border crossings, especially during the summer season. It is recommended that they check their passports in advance, plan their arrival early and use any data entry applications.
Croatia and Hungary have already announced the implementation of EES.
