Fifteen cases of femicide since the beginning of the year
Vanja Macanović from the Autonomous Women's Center tells "Vreme" that 15 cases of femicide have been recorded since the beginning of the year.
"A larger number appears in the media, but we are focused on the result of partner and family relationships, attempted rape or persecution," says Macanović.
They did not receive detailed information about this case, but lately the victims of femicide are mostly women over 46 years old.
"A large percentage of them did not report violence before." We don't know how it was in this particular case", says Macanović.
There are many ways to help
The appeal to the institutions to toughen the punishments and to act upon the report is often repeated, but the interlocutor of "Vremena" draws attention to the fact that citizens should also be appealed to.
"Let it be an appeal to all those who knew that she lived in violence." That they can support women by contacting women's organizations. If they turn for help, let's see how to reach the woman", says Macanović.
If a woman does not trust institutions, organizations for the protection of women from violence can help her regain it.
"There are various ways, it's not just about calling the police." Women's organizations can help create a safe space for the victim to talk to them," says Macanović.
He also emphasizes that it is important that if someone reports violence, and the victim does not agree with it, that this should be emphasized.
"Because every report of violence increases the risk for the victim," says our interlocutor, adding that institutions cannot be expected to know everything, and that "the environment must also get involved and help the victim seek help."
