Academician Matija Bećković said that for him young people in Serbia are a big, pleasant surprise, that he is bothered by the "old people" who appear around the students, and that everyone now sees that this has been demolished.
Academician Matija Bećković attracted the attention of the media with these assessments of everyday life in Serbia.
"It's a new generation that I thought raised their hands, that they were learning and planning in advance where they were going to go, that they had no hope or perspective here. And suddenly they said that they were interested," said Bećković, speaking about the young people in an interview for Biznis magazin.
Students "suddenly came forward to say they were interested," he said.
"The most current saying was - I have no idea, I've never heard of it, I don't really care. The world that is now on the street, that was their reaction and answer to any serious question. And now they appeared as someone who knows, who it concerns, who declares about something they care about the most. And that's a great joy. No one has seen Serbia like that for a long time. They didn't even know it existed. It's something new," said Bećković.
He tells young people "to beware of those who hang around them".
"Don't let the young people work for others, which we've already seen, and who can't even come to an agreement. Now everyone sees that this has been demolished, but they don't see what's coming," said Bećković.
Speaking about the protests in Serbia that have been going on for months, Bećković said that he sees young, beautiful, smart people and girls that, he said, he did not know existed. He is bothered, he points out, by the "old people" who appear around the students.
"They behave as if it is their world, as if they shaped it and as if they came up with it. Now suddenly there are some old men who interpret what they want. And somehow there is no alternative. You can see that it will collapse, but it seems that it will go to the Bermuda Triangle," said academician Matija Bećković.
