Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner's firm Affinity Partners denies having a role in the forgery of the document on the basis of which the General Staff building was stripped of its status as a cultural asset. "We will review this situation and decide on the next steps," the company said in a statement
The news that the head of the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments, Goran Vasić, admitted that forged a document allowing the demolition of the former building General Staff it also reached the largest American media.
As the "New York Times" writes, the luxury hotel project worth 500 million dollars, which the family Tramp plans to build in Serbia on the site of the former General Staff building destroyed in the NATO bombing, he encountered an unpleasant obstacle.
A key document relied on by the Serbian government to enable the project to be implemented has been forged, officials announced this week.
Son-in-law of the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump Jared Kushner, in cooperation with business partners, plans to build a luxury residential and business facility on the site of the ruins, which would include the "Trump International Hotel", the first of its kind in Europe.
The project received preliminary support from the Serbian government last year, before the complex's status as a cultural property was officially revoked.
Government officials now claim that the director of the agency, Goran Vasić, falsified an expert opinion in order to justify the decision to revoke the protection of the complex as a cultural asset, writes the "New York Times".
"Vasić falsified the proposal for a decision on revoking the status of a cultural property," the statement of the Prosecutor's Office for Organized Crime states.
The falsified document served as the legal basis for removing the protection from the complex.
Vasić is now on trial for abuse of office and falsification of an official document, officials in Belgrade announced.
Affinity Partners: We have nothing to do with it
Regarding the news that Vasić falsified a key document, Jared Kushner's company Affinity Partners also announced.
The company said it had no role in the review of the site's status.
"Today, we learned from media reports that a former official of the Serbian government, who has nothing to do with our company, allegedly falsified documents related to the status of the Belgrade complex," the company said in a statement.
"We will review this situation and decide on the next steps," it added.
As the "New York Times" writes, in Serbia, the possibility of the historical complex being demolished in order to build a luxury hotel caused outrage.
Several protests against the demolition of the General Staff were held in Belgrade, and the last one was organized in March, on the 26th anniversary of the NATO bombing.
Donald Trump Jr., the eldest son of the US president, has visited Serbia twice in the past few months to express his support for President Aleksandar Vučić.
The project in Serbia is one of several current Trump family deals involving foreign governments. These include the United Arab Emirates' $2 billion investment in Trump's cryptocurrency company, as well as luxury real estate in Qatar and Oman.
