In the local elections in Croatia, as many as nine mayors of county centers secured a new four-year mandate already in the first round, data from the State Election Commission showed. In another ten cities, citizens will decide on the new or old leadership in the second round

Nine mayors of county centers in the first round of local elections in Croatia received more than 50 percent of the votes and secured another four-year mandate, and in the second electoral district the leaders of 10 more Croatian cities will be elected, where eight current mayors are fighting for another mandate, the State Election Commission (DIP) announced.

In the largest city of Zagreb County, Velika Gorica, the mayor for the next four years will be the current mayor, HDZ's Krešimir Ačkar, who won 72,55 percent of the votes in the first round, Hina reported.

The mayor of Krapina remains HDZ's Zoran Gregurović with 63,45 percent of the votes, and in Virovitica HDZ's Ivica Kirin, who won 57,64 percent of the votes in the first round.

SDP's Mišel Jakšić remains the mayor of Koprivnica, since he won 71,06 percent of the votes in the first round, and HDZ's Ivan Radić remains the mayor of Osijek after winning 70,95 percent of the votes.

Bjelovar is also a city that will be led by the same person for the next four years - HSLS's Dario Hrebak, who received 81,13 percent of the votes in the first round.

Tomašević's record in Zagreb

Zagreb Mayor Tomislav Tomašević won more votes in the first round of the current local elections than he did four years ago, on May 16, 2021.

In this way, he broke his own record, because four years ago Tomašević won the largest number of votes since direct elections for the post of mayor were introduced in 2009, writes Slobodna Dalmacija.

The current result is "either a confirmation of the good direction of his administration or a consequence of the extremely aggressive desires of compromised political actors to get possession of the Zagreb budget, which weighs almost three billion euros, at any cost", the portal assesses.

According to the results of the DIP in today's local elections for mayor in Zagreb, with 95,87 percent of votes processed, Tomislav Tomašević leads with 47,30 percent (with more than 128 thousand votes), and independent candidate Marija Selak Raspudić won 15,74 percent (almost 43 thousand votes) and entry into the second round.

There are also resignations due to poor results

Due to the poor election results for the Istrian prefect, the IDS president resigned
Due to the poor results in the local elections and the fact that he failed to make it to the second round of the election for Istrian prefect in the local elections held today in Croatia, the president of the Istrian Democratic Union (IDS) Dalibor Paus has resigned from the position of party president.

"I thank all the voters who went to the polls and everyone who gave their vote to IDS. Unfortunately, the divisions within IDS have borne fruit, and this is reflected in the results of the elections for the Istrian prefect. Considering the results, I am resigning from the position of president of IDS at this moment," said Paus, reports Hina.

According to the unofficial results of the local elections in Croatia, Paus finished only in third place in the race for Istrian prefect, behind Boris Miletić (independent) and Sanja Radolović (SDP).

"It is too early to analyze the results, we need to look at the situation. The party will decide when the process of electing a new president will start," said Paus, adding that he will continue to fight for Istria in the Croatian Parliament.
