My colleague Miloš Jocić, a professor of Serbian literature at the Faculty of Philosophy in Novi Sad, yesterday evening, Wednesday night, was taken from his home for questioning, and then detained - he was taken from Novi Sad to the custody unit in Bac.
Today (or when some "higher instances" decide), like a serious criminal, he will be brought in a cage on wheels before the judge.
Miloš was not the only one arrested, the police took AUNS assistant Veroljub Naumović in the early hours of the morning, but he was released in the meantime.
Any further explanation is redundant, when the police in one country take away professors during the night and imprison them. I think we all know what time we live in, and it's the 1930s on repeat.
The fight against stupidity and evil
I believe that the Faculty of Philosophy, the Academy of Arts and the University of Novi Sad are obliged to react to these arrests - this is absolutely necessary so that in the future we can meaningfully talk about very serious words in the names of these institutions: philosophy, art, faculty, academy, university
The struggle to keep these words from becoming empty signifiers is at the same time a struggle against stupidity and evil. If we lose it_,_ those who haven't walked on this earth for a long time, and who breathed the same air that we breathe today, will not survive that defeat either.
A few days ago, Ivan Milenković asked me to comment on the dangers of contemporary fascism for Vreme. This is a supplement to my comment: Rastko Močnik once asked an interesting question: How much fascism? I think that in the case of our time, we can answer without hesitation: Unfortunately too much!
