During the debate in the European Parliament on this issue, Davor Ivo Štir, MP of the European Parliament and the spokesperson of the EPP parliamentary group for Serbia, said that the attitude towards Mladic goes beyond the scope of the internal political debate.
"The glorification of Ratko Mladić and the military honors shown at his funeral can only damage Serbia's credibility and threaten its path to to the European Union", pointed out Stir.
Štir pointed out that European integration does not mean only the fulfillment of technical conditions, but also the acceptance and respect of fundamental European values.
That is why, according to his opinion, glorifying Mladic and paying military honors at his funeral can further damage Serbia's reputation and threaten its path to membership in the European Union.
He also pointed to the moral dimension of the attitude towards the wars of the 1990s, assessing that an honest confrontation with the past cannot be based on denying, glorifying or changing historical facts.
According to him, lasting reconciliation is not possible without truth and respect for the victims.
The glorification of Mladić, who was convicted of war crimes, in his opinion deepens divisions, encourages historical revisionism and hinders efforts aimed at long-term peace and reconciliation.
Štir stated that the EPP parliamentary group expresses solidarity with the victims of genocide and war crimes.
