As many as 41,8 percent believe that the EU is trying to integrate Serbia because access to lithium and natural resources, and as many as 43,9 percent of citizens believe that it is more important for the EU that Serbia introduces sanctions against Russia rather than becoming a developed democracy.
The research was conducted on a representative sample of citizens of Serbia out of a thousand respondents, excluding Kosovo, using the field survey method, in the period from January 19 to February 2 of this year.
Citizens still showed low trust in the impartiality of the EU in the enlargement process, since only 27,7 percent of citizens believe that the EU applies the same rules to all candidates. And only 25,7 percent of citizens believe that the EU really wants to integrate Serbia into the European community.
About entry
Of those who would go to the referendum, 41,6 would vote for Serbia's membership in the European Union, according to the public opinion survey by the Center for European Policies. 32,4 percent of them would vote against the referendum, while a little more than a quarter (26 percent) do not know how they would vote.
A relative majority of citizens (39,8 percent support Serbia's membership in the EU), while 33,8 percent oppose it. About a quarter of citizens (26,4 percent) have a neutral attitude, according to the results of the survey, adding that support for membership is highest among people aged between 18 and 29, and lowest among the population over 60 years old.
A little more than half of citizens (51,7 percent) believe that democracy is always the best form of government regardless of the circumstances, and only 34,2 percent of citizens said that they feel like a European.
Weak voice
It is interesting that almost a quarter of citizens (23,9 percent) believe that Serbia will never join the European Union, 21,9 percent do not know how to estimate, and only 6,9 percent believe that it will happen before 2030.
Also, a large number of citizens view the EU primarily as a geopolitical actor, and less as a valuable actor, and are suspicious of the EU's intentions towards Serbia in the enlargement process. As many as 41,6 percent of citizens believe that the EU is more interested in realizing its own political and economic interests in our region than in the state of democracy and the rule of law.
