Welcoming the President of the Republic Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the "Nikola Tesla" airport is scheduled for Thursday, October 10, around 19 p.m., announced the Service for Cooperation with the Media of the President of the Republic.
According to the program of the visit, tomorrow at 11.00:XNUMX a.m. a welcoming ceremony will be held in front of the Palace of Serbia.
Last visit two years ago
Previously, Erdogan visited Serbia for the last time in September 2022, it says CSR.
At that time, Vučić asked the Turkish president for help in delivering electricity from Azerbaijan to Serbia.
Vučić said at the time that he had discussed with Erdogan about greater military cooperation and greater cooperation between the dedicated industries of Serbia and Turkey. He repeated that Serbia wants to buy Turkish drones "Bajraktar", but the purchase was never realized.
At that time, a protocol was signed that enabled the travel of citizens of Serbia and Turkey to those two countries with ID card.
Before that, the Turkish president came to Serbia in 2019, when 140 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries were marked.
In April 2018, the president of Turkey was declared an honorary citizen of the largest city in the Sandžak region, in the south of Serbia, due to the investments made in the development of the infrastructure of Novi Pazar.
Six months before that, in 2017, Erdoğan visited Novi Pazar, where thousands of residents welcomed him on the central square in front of the town hall.
Extradition of Turkish citizens
Serbia otherwise has a disputed history of extraditing Turkish citizens to that country, despite calls from the UN to refrain from extradition.
Such a case happened in 2017 with the Kurd Cevdet Ayaz, who was sentenced to 15 years in prison in Turkey for subverting the constitutional order.
On December 25, 2017, Serbia carried out the extradition despite the request of the United Nations Committee against Torture not to do so in the case of the Kurd Cevdet Ayaz, given that the Strasbourg Court for Human Rights asserted that Ayaz had been exposed during his earlier detention in his homeland torture.
The then Serbian Minister of Justice, Nela Kuborović, signed the extradition decision, explaining that the request from the United Nations arrived late.
The UN committee denied claims of a delay.
In 2019, the UN Committee against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Punishments or Actions issued a decision holding Serbia responsible for the extradition of Kurdish political activist Cevdet Ayaz. As it was announced, by extraditing Serbia "violated Art. 3 and Art. 22 of the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment".
Ajaz is serving a fifteen-year prison sentence in Turkey.
In Serbia, there was also a dispute over the Turkish activist and politician Ecevit Piroğlu (Ecevit Piroğlu). After years of legal struggle, he left Serbia in August of this year.
Piroglu was arrested in Serbia in 2021 on an Interpol warrant issued by Turkey accusing him of terrorism and warfare in Syria. Piroglu and his defense contested the charges, claiming they were politically motivated.
The court in Belgrade rejected Turkey's request for his extradition, however, the authorities did not grant him asylum and therefore he had to leave Serbia.
