While in Serbia the project Djerdap 3 found itself in the spotlight again after the American Embassy in Belgrade announced a call for expressions of interest in its construction, in Romania the reaction of state institutions is considerably more cautious.
The Romanian government announced that the Iron Gates 3 project, as Djerdap 3 is called in that country, is currently in the inter-ministerial evaluation stage. As Romania Insider reports, referring to the government's response to the Economica.net portal, the analysis includes economic effects, consequences for Romania's energy system, but also possible environmental impacts.
Official Bucharest says that it is "in principle completely open" to the implementation of the project, but at the same time emphasizes that a decision has not yet been made and that assessments are ongoing.
Warnings can already be found in the Romanian media that the project could cause new disputes over the management of water resources and environmental protection in the Danube area.
At the same time, the Romanian authorities are considering the possible effects of the project on the work of the existing ones hydroelectric power plant Iron Gates 1 and Iron Gates 2 (Đerdap 1 and 2), which Romania and Serbia jointly manage since the period of socialist Yugoslavia and Romania, which further adds to the complexity of the assessment.

Embassy of the United States of America in Serbia published a public call for expressions of interest to participate in the Reversible construction project hydropower plants (RHE) Đerdap 3, thus taking a new step towards the realization of one of the largest energy projects in Southeastern Europe.
It is a step that should test the interest of companies in the construction of a reversible hydroelectric power plant with a capacity of about 2.400 megawatts, with an additional 400 megawatts from renewable energy sources. The value of the project is estimated at around 2,63 billion euros, and completion is tentatively planned for 2038.
The American involvement represents a continuation of long-standing attempts to find a model of financing and implementation of the project, which has been discussed since the eighties of the last century. The American Bechtel was mentioned among the companies that previously participated in the preparatory studies.
