Citizens and activists of the Citizens' Assemblies of Novi Sad will block the intersection near the Master Center for 20 minutes today, April 27, at the corner of Bulevar Kralja Petar 1 and Rumenačka Street, because of Novi Sad activists who are still in custody.
Blockades are organized every time at a different location and for a minute longer, and it will be like this until all the activists are released from prison on Klis, portal 021 reports.
Yesterday's blockade at the corner of Hadži Ruvimova and Bulevar Europa lasted 19 minutes, the blockade before it at the Futoška market lasted 18 minutes, and the first one at the court in Novi Sad for 17 minutes.
The case of Ivan Petrovic
Ivan Petrović (21), who was the last to be released from custody for participating in protests in Novi Sad in November 2024 just because he doesn't have a permanent address since he grew up without parental care in the social welfare system, apparently he is back in custody.
This was pointed out by the Choirs of Novi Sad at the recently held protest in support of their comrades Nikola and Dimitrije.
"A young man has been lying in a cell with Nikola since November 5, 2024, because of the 'attack on the City Hall' in Novi Sad. That young man does not suffer injustice only because he is in prison because of the fight for freedom and the responsibility of those whose hands are bloody, but he also suffers injustice because he is forgotten by everyone. We must not forget any of our citizens and comrades who are out of freedom because of the fight for freedom, because no one is alone," it was stated at the protest of the Zborova Novi Sad held April 24.
However, on December 27, 2024, the media reported that lawyer Danilo Stanojević stated that Petrović was released from custody that day.
"The investigation is now proceeding normally and the prosecution is proving the allegations," Stanojević told the FoNet agency at the time.
"Danger of escape"
Petrović's case attracted a lot of public attention due to specific circumstances, that is, because he has been in custody much longer than the other participants because he does not have an official residential address. In the documents, his address is referred to the Center for Social Work, which the court used as a basis for determining and extending the detention due to the "danger of escape" or "inaccessibility to law enforcement authorities."
Petrović is accused of violent behavior at a public meeting. During the protest for which he was detained, activists pointed out that masked persons broke the windows and cameras of the City Hall, while some arrested participants, like Petrović, were prosecuted while the real culprits often were not.
Although he was apparently released at the end of 2024 to defend himself, according to the claims of activists from the organization Zborovi Novi Sad, he is still "lying" in the Klisa prison while other suspects for more serious crimes are released.
Activists believe that Petrović is in custody because he is poor and point out that he would probably be free if he had a family or his own real estate that would guarantee his availability to the court.
