After several months blockade, the administration of the Faculty of Sports and Physical Education in Novi Sad made a decision to hold it online classes and the continuation of the winter and the beginning of the summer semester, but the students of that faculty in the blockade oppose such a decision.
Due to the decision to start online classes, Novi Sad DIF students started a few days ago complete blockade of the institution. At the plenum, they voted for a total blockade, which means banning teachers and other staff from entering the faculty.
They decided to take this step because of the "illegitimate decisions" of the Teaching and Research Council, which decided to start online classes without consulting the students.
On Friday (April 25) morning, Dean Patrick Dryd burst into the faculty and invited students to form a team that would come to a meeting with him. When entering, he tore up student posters.
"There was nothing like this even during Nazism," the dean complained via social networks.
The dean and students held a meeting and scheduled the next one for Monday (April 27).
"Unfortunately, while I was on a business trip, an informal group of students decided not to allow employees to hold classes. We have 923 active students, more than 500 have signed up for online classes. That's why we made the decision to have a meeting with an informal group of students on Monday. They say they have 460 emails opposing online classes. We will cross-check the data on Monday," said the dean.
As he added, students who want to study must be allowed to do so.
What do students say about the blockade?
"This morning, the dean of our faculty, Patrick Dryd, came with seven or eight other employees. He called us to go out in front of the building to negotiate. When we went out to negotiate with him, the dean came to the door and led the employees inside the faculty building. After half an hour, we received information to form a team for negotiations, I don't know what that should even mean, but he invited us to form a team to see what we will do next," Milan, a student, explained to 021.rs Faculty of Sports and Physical Education.
After the meeting, one of the female students told the crowd that they accepted that the decision of the majority should be seen and that the blockade would continue.
Blocking until the request is fulfilled
As the students of this faculty announced earlier, "the response of students for online classes is very low, that's why we think that there are so many announcements from the faculty regarding online classes, because they are not satisfied with the response".
"We conducted an e-mail survey with the students of our faculty, we have over 440 students who have declared that they will boycott online classes. And these are not all students, because some of them did not have a valid e-mail when they enrolled in the faculty," one student said a few days ago about the blocking of 021.
As the dean stated in a video address on Friday, more than 500 students attend online classes.
The students added that the condition to end the blockade is the fulfillment of student demands.
After the announcement about the beginning of classes, there was also a new one - about the availability of teaching materials.
"We inform you that teaching materials from the winter semester for all subjects will be available for monitoring until Friday, April 25, 2025, after which access will no longer be possible. We recommend that you review and download everything you need in time," the faculty statement said.
Apart from the students of that Novi Sad faculty, the students of the Academy of Vocational Studies of Western Serbia in Užice also started a total blockade.
Online classes in recent weeks have started in na medical faculties in Niš i Kragujevac, and the students in the blockade of those two higher education institutions oppose it.
