The informal group "Zaječarci u blockade" will organize a protest on Saturday (May 24) called "Freedom moves from the east" in that city, two weeks ago first local elections since the beginning of the student protests.
It was announced that students from all over Serbia will come to the protest in Zaječar, as part of the "pre-election awakening".
Groups of runners left for Zaječar on May 23 from Paraćin and on May 22 from Kladovo. Walkers from Belgrade and Novi Sad started from Petrovac na Mlava on May 22, while cyclists from Belgrade and Novi Sad started their journey to Zaječar on May 21, on the Belgrade-Požarevac-Majdanpek-Zaječar route.
A reception was prepared for the students arriving in Zaječar on Friday at Liberation Square.
The protest lasts 12 hours.
The students announced the protest plan, which will last 12 hours.
The plan is for the protest to start at 11 am. After a sixteen-minute silence for the 16 victims of the fall of the canopy in Novi Sad, there will be speeches by students in the blockade, as well as the performances "Voting for the favorite electoral theft" and "Closing the ballot boxes".
From 16:16.30 to 17:XNUMX there will be a parade of veterans, followed by a parade of bikers. From XNUMX:XNUMX, the welcome of cyclists from Negotin is planned.
Actor Tihomir Stanić will be among the speakers at the protest, and there will also be a concert by the Belgrade Union, as well as a fashion show "Take off corruption. Put on freedom."
The protest will end with another sixteen-minute silence, which will be followed by street cleaning.
Students rejected for accommodation
Although a reception was organized for the students arriving in Zaječar due to the protest, student Jovana from Zaječar told N1 that the primary and secondary schools in this city refused to accommodate the students, and they will all be accommodated privately.
"What we know, as far as accommodation is concerned, is that this time we don't have school halls. We were rejected from all primary and secondary schools, but thanks to the solidarity of the citizens, every student who arrives in our city will be accommodated privately. We were rejected for that medical center, which was supposed to be in the premises of an elementary school," she added.
Male and female students from Zaječar appealed to citizens to donate medical materials needed for May 23 and 24. The most urgent are medicines (Dexomen, Bulardi, Smecta, Orosal 65, analgesics), vitamins and supplements, creams, ointments and sprays for injuries of the bone and joint system and disinfectants and rinses.
The government is bringing out the heavyweights.
The protest in Zaječar takes place two weeks before the local elections in this city, which a large part of the public sees as litmus test for the republic.
In addition to Zaječar, elections will also be held in Kosjerić on the same day. They were announced by the President of the National Assembly, Ana Brnabić, on April 13, 2025.
That these elections are important can be seen from the fact that the government sent heavy artillery from the very top of the Serbian Progressive Party to the field.
On May 1, Brnabić stayed in Zaječar, and Vladimir Videnović, the candidate for mayor of the city of Zaječar in front of the "We will not give Serbia-Aleksandar Vučić" list, thanked her for her visit.
Her visit to this city in the east of Serbia was also marked by a lunch, to which, as Glas Zaječara wrote, pensioners from that city and the surrounding villages were invited. As surprise guests at the lunch at the hotel were some city officials, SNS officials, but also Ana Brnabić.
On that occasion, among other things, Ana Brnabić said that every vote is important, not because she doubts the victory, Glas Zaječara writes.
"I have no doubts about the victory, but they will envy you. That victory must be convincing in order to stop this terror and to show in Zaječar and Kosjerić that there is nothing to do with terror, that Serbia was not afraid and will not retreat in the face of the worst," said Ana Brnabić, among other things.
As soon as Brnabić left Zaječar, the president of the Serbian Progressive Party and the former prime minister of the Serbian government, Miloš Vučević, was also staying in that city.
Vučević visited the activists of the City Committee of the Serbian Progressive Party Zaječar, Zaječar wrote online, and a celebration was also organized for women from that city.
"Today, this is not a fight for the Serbian Progressive Party. It is a fight for Zaječar and for our homeland," said Vučević, thanking him for the warm welcome.
"Thank you for everything you do for Zaječar and for the whole of Serbia. I believe that we will win together," emphasized Vućević and added: "We are going to win on June 8. Long live Zaječar, long live Timočka krajina."
