President of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić he recently announced again that he will resign, this time on September 27, after returning from New York from the session of the General Assembly of the United Nations.
As Vučić announced, then as a citizen he will go on a campaign and visit the most remote parts of Serbia. He said that he will have three or four large rallies, in Kragujevac, Belgrade, Novi Sad and Niš, where he announced the final rally.
When will the presidential elections be held if he resigns
If Vučić resigns on September 27, as he announced, his mandate will end when the resignation reaches the National Assembly. In that case, the presidential elections must be called so that the voting takes place no later than three months after the end of his mandate.
Elections are announced by the President of the National Assembly, and a minimum of 30 and a maximum of 60 days must pass from the date of the announcement to the day of voting. The law also stipulates that voting day must be a non-working day.
If Vučić resigns on September 27, the deadline for holding presidential elections would be December 27. That date falls on a Sunday, so if the maximum deadline is used, the elections could be held right then.
On the other hand, elections could be held no earlier than 30 days after their announcement. If the President of the National Assembly were to call the elections immediately after Vučić's resignation, the earliest date for voting would be October 27. Since the law stipulates that the voting day must be a non-working day, the first following week would be the first of November, that is, the two-year anniversary of the fall of the roof of the Railway Station in Novi Sad.
Will the president be elected on October 25
If Vučić resigns on September 27, the presidential elections will not be able to be held on the same day as the extraordinary parliamentary elections, which are scheduled for October 25.
The reason is the deadlines for announcing the presidential elections. At least 30 days must pass from their announcement to the day of voting. Since Vučić, according to the announcement, will only resign on September 27, the presidential elections cannot be called early enough to be held on October 25.

In order for the presidential and parliamentary elections to be held on the same day, the resignation would have to be submitted early enough for the President of the National Assembly to call the presidential elections at least 30 days before October 25 and September 25, respectively.
When the presidential elections must be held if Vučić does not resign
If Vučić does not resign, his second presidential term will last five years from taking the oath, that is, until May 31, 2027. The President was sworn in on May 31, 2022, following the elections held on April 3.
According to the Law on the Election of the President of the Republic, regular presidential elections are announced 90 days before the end of the mandate, so that voting takes place in the next 60 days.
This means that regular presidential elections in 2027 would have to be held no later than that deadline, while the exact date would depend on the day when the elections are called.
It is important to note that 90 days refers to the deadline for announcing elections, and not to the termination of the presidential mandate. Vučić's mandate, if it is not terminated earlier, ends at the end of the five-year period, that is, on May 31, 2027.
