Mermaid in Aswara

In the context of the Cold War, the Franco regime allowed the US to open military bases on Spanish territory, which began the process of international rehabilitation of the country and its gradual return to international political currents. During his reign, Franco did not forget his old alliances, so Spain served as a refuge for many fugitives, among whom was Ante Pavelić, whose grave, despite numerous discussions about its relocation, is still located at Madrid's San Isidro cemetery.

The repressive dream of every dictatorship

With the imposition of a state of emergency and curfew, the use of the military, and eventually arrests, protesters in Chile were persecuted and punished. Decrees were introduced whereby university rectors were appointed by the army, while campuses were nationalized or privatized. It was only in 1987, near the end of Pinochet's dictatorship, that the students managed to force the regime to make concessions through a new series of protests and restore some kind of limited autonomy.

For whom the bell tolled

In a world without ideology, the story of 1800 Yugoslavs who, because of their ideals, voluntarily went to Spain to fight against fascism sounds almost incomprehensible. Each of those fates would be a novel in itself. For many Spanish fighters, the real pain began only when the republic was defeated and Spain was ruled by Franco. Those who survived enjoyed the reputation of the "Spanish elite" in socialist Yugoslavia. From this year, their descendants, as a sign of gratitude, can receive citizenship from Spain
