During her visit to Pristina, the President of the European Commission said that nothing can rewrite the history of Kosovo, stressing that the verdicts in The Hague refer to individual responsibility.
At the press conference after the meeting with the Prime Minister of Kosovo Albina Kurti she called for respect for the mandate of judicial institutions and recalled the repression and humanitarian crisis of 1999, emphasizing the constant support of the European Union Kosovo.
"Nothing and no one can rewrite the history of Kosovo. The year 1999 is deeply embedded in the collective memory of Europe - violent repression, humanitarian crisis and suffering that your people experienced," she said.
About the verdicts in The Hague
Speaking about the verdict of the Specialized Chambers, the President of the European Commission emphasized that the convicted have the right to appeal and called for respect for the decisions of independent judicial institutions.
"The verdict of the Specialized Chambers caused strong emotions. I appreciate your restrained reaction, as well as the reaction of other political leaders who called for calm," said Ursula von der Leyen, adding that the verdict was passed by independent institutions and that their mandate must be respected, and that the accused have the right to appeal.
She emphasized that the verdict does not judge Kosovo's resistance, but rather that it refers to the individual responsibility of the convicted.

"In December 2026, it will be four years since Kosovo applied for admission to the EU. Based on its merits, it meets the criteria for the status of a candidate state and for the opening of accession negotiations," Kurti said.
He also asked for the support of the President of the European Commission to raise the issue in the institutions of the Union.
