More than 70 firefighters and 13 Canadians were trying to contain the large fire on the outskirts of Athens, and the residents of two nearby settlements had to leave their homes and businesses.
Traffic was suspended along the main highway connecting Koropi and the suburbs of Athens. One warehouse is on fire, and in conditions of increased wind, the fire also engulfed the dry dock for boats, fields of dry grass and olive trees.
There is no information about the wounded or dead.
It is not yet clear what caused the fire, but several people have been arrested and charged with accidentally starting it.
Four military planes, six helicopters, dozens of fire trucks and more than 50 firefighters were deployed to fight the fire.
Weeks without rain
