About 12.000 flights worldwide SAD, scheduled for the weekend, was canceled after a major snow and ice storm wreaked havoc across the country, threatening to cause power outages as well. About 190 million people, or more than 40 percent of the US population, were under a warning winter storm from New Mexico to New England.
The National Weather Service forecast warned of widespread heavy snowfall and an ice belt stretching from East Texas to North Carolina. Parts of southeastern Oklahoma, eastern Texas and parts of Louisiana reported 0,6 inches of ice.
Entire cities in ice
Meteorologists said that immediately after that storm it will be very cold, so the snow and ice will melt slowly. The Texas Department of Transportation said today that many highways are covered in snow in the suburbs north of Dallas. The ice and sleet that hit North Texas overnight continued to fall in the central part of the state.
Ice formed on roads and bridges in a third of Mississippi counties. More than 112.000 power outages were reported across the country, including about 55.000 in Texas, 13.700 in Louisiana and nearly 11.800 in New Mexico.
