In three coordinated attacks by female suicide bombers in Nigeria at least 18 people were killed, while 30 were wounded, local officials announced today, reports the Associated Press agency.
The first of the three attacks that took place in the city of Gwoza in the north-east of Nigeria was at a wedding celebration, and a few minutes later there was a second explosion near the General Hospital where, according to doctors, there are children and pregnant women who have died, in order to a third attack took place at a funeral, which was carried out by a female bomber, disguised as a mourner.
Authorities imposed a curfew in the city and the community remained on high alert following reports of another suspected bomber in Pulka, a town about two kilometers from Gwoza.
No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attacks, but Gwoza is in Borno state, which was hit hard by the 2009 insurgency launched by the Islamic extremist group Boko Haram.
In the past, Boko Haram has used women and girls in suicide bombings.
Boko Haram, which is affiliated with the group Islamic State, wants to establish the Islamic State in Nigeria, an oil giant in West Africa with a population of about 170 million people divided between a predominantly Christian south and a predominantly Muslim north.
