Hungarian On Monday, the parliament adopted a constitutional amendment by a large majority of votes, which allows the removal of the President of the State, Tamas Suljok, and the President of the Constitutional Court, Peter Polt.
"Whenever he had to choose between constitutional principles and the interests of Fidesz, Suljok chose the interests of Fidesz and continues to do so to this day," the Prime Minister said Peter the Hungarian in a speech before the vote, reports Politiko.
The amendment was adopted with 139 votes in favor and six against, after Fidesz MPs boycotted the vote. Suljok will now have five days to sign the amendment, and if he fails to do so, the Hungarian said he will be removed from parliament.
The amendment foresees that the mandate of Suljok, who has been in office since March 2024, will end the day after it enters into force, and the parliament will then have 30 days to elect a new president, whose mandate will not last longer than five years.
Suljok now has the option to send the amendment to the Constitutional Court for evaluation, which can only decide on procedural issues, but not on whether it is in accordance with the constitution.
The amendment also introduces a mandatory retirement age of 70 for all judges of the Constitutional Court, which would result in the removal of four current judges, including the president of the court.
Former Prime Minister and President of Fidesz Viktor Orban he declared after the vote in parliament that his party would not recognize the aggressive methods of the autocracy.
"If the president is forcibly removed, Hungary will have the right to resist and we will use that right," Orbán said.
