The President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, senior officials of the US administration and prominent members of the Trump movement "Make America Great Again" today paid their respects Charlie Kirk, and on commemorative gathering held at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
The commemoration for Kirk, whom Trump credits with a key role in his 2024 election victory, gathered tens of thousands of people, including US Vice President JD Vance, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Pentagon chief Pete Hegsett and other senior administration officials, reports AP.
When Trump was shown on the big screens, the crowd started chanting: "USA, USA."
Trump smiled and watched from his box, which included chief of staff Susie Wiles, his son-in-law Jared Kushner, son Donald Trump Jr. and deputy chief of staff Dan Scavino.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio highlighted Kirk's personal friendship with US President Donald Trump and senior White House officials and called the killing "a political assassination, but also a death at a family event".
Trump and Musk meeting
Rubio also said the State Department is "definitely denying visas" to people who "celebrate" Kirk's murder.
As Rubio spoke, American billionaire Elon Musk sat down next to Trump, who reached out and patted his knee.
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegsett called Kirk "a true believer in freedom, in the power of young people, in our republic and in our founding principles of putting America first and making America great again."
Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. recalled Kirk's "commitment to God" and drew a parallel between the life of the slain American patriot and that of Jesus Christ.
"Christ died at 33, but he changed the course of history. Charlie died at 31 because he surrendered. Now he has changed the course of history," he said.
US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard told the audience that Charlie Kirk was a "warrior" for freedom on the "battlefield of ideas".
She asserted that Kirk lived for free speech.
White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles said during the memorial service that she was blessed to have worked with Charlie Kirk over the past few years.
She praised him for building "the most powerful youth movement of our time."
The lectern was placed on stage behind bulletproof glass, which is rarely seen at indoor events.
A murder that divided a nation
The screens showed a video showing Kirk at Utah Valley University, where he was later killed.
Crowds of people arrived before dawn to enter the stadium and pay their respects to Kirk, who was killed on stage in Utah on September 10 while debating with students, Reuters reports.
Large American flags hung on both sides of the main stage, which was decorated in burgundy and gold.
Kirk, 31, was shot and killed while answering questions at an event on the Utah campus organized by Turning Point.
Technical college student Tyler Robinson, 22, is charged with Kirk's murder, which has sparked fears of rising political violence in the US across the ideological spectrum while deepening partisan divisions, the agency said.
