Early this morning, August 16, Russian forces launched a missile attack on Kiev, causing fires in at least two districts of the Ukrainian capital, announced the mayor of Kyiv. The air raid alert was sounded just after two in the morning, and residents reported multiple explosions. According to the Ukrainian authorities, one person was killed in the attack.
The attack on Kiev followed after Ukraine announced that it had carried out strikes on targets deep inside Russian territory.
The Ukrainian armed forces claim that a military airport in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast and the Progress missile center in Samara Oblast were directly hit, with fires breaking out at both locations.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said on Saturday, August 15, that Ukrainian "Flamingo" missiles hit a missile facility about 900 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. As he stated, the target of the attack was objects deep in the territory of Russia.
"It is important to reduce the potential of Russia. We need peace and this must be evident in Russia - through damage to certain objects," Zelensky wrote on the X social network.
At the same time, Russia announced that it had carried out new attacks on Ukraine the previous day. The Russian Defense Ministry said on Saturday that Russian drones and missiles had struck Ukrainian logistics centers, as well as energy and transport infrastructure used by the Ukrainian military, over the past 24 hours.
In one of the Russian attacks, on a residential building in the southeast of Ukraine, a three-month-old baby was killed, while 11 people were wounded, local officials announced.
Moscow's reaction to arming Ukraine with American weapons from Turkey
In addition to mutual attacks, Moscow also reacted to allegations of possible additional arming of Ukraine.
Russia has asked Washington and Ankara to explain reports of possible plans to transfer to Kiev a "significant arsenal" of US weapons and ammunition held by Turkey, a Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said. Maria Zakharova.
She warned that such a transfer could cause "serious damage" to Russia's bilateral relations with the United States of America and Turkey.
