Trump and Giorgio Meloni were filmed speaking at the Group of 7 summit in Evian, France this week, and Meloni later told the media that their relationship remained unchanged and there had been no "mutual recriminations".
Trump then said in a phone interview with the Italian channel LA7 that she "begged him for the photo and he was sorry."

"She was probably happy that I talked to her," Trump said, although TV LA7 did not broadcast the president's original statement in English, instead playing an Italian translation over his words.
In a post on Instagram, where she has seven million followers, Giorgia Meloni reacted with surprise and emphasized that she was stunned by Trump's statement.
"I don't know why the American president is treating allies like that," she said, noting that this is not the first time it has happened.
Giorgio Meloni emphasized that Trump "must remember one thing" - that neither she nor Italy beg.
