U United States of America marks the 25th anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
Train September 11, 2001 4 passenger planes were hijacked and used as guided missiles.
At the place that is today called "ground zero", 2.606 people lost their lives when two planes crashed into the Twin Towers. The plane that crashed into the Pentagon killed 184 people. The fourth plane was shot down in Pennsylvania, and there were no survivors among the 59 passengers.

Attack on the USA
Four planes flying over the east coast of America were hijacked simultaneously.
It was done by a group of 19 kidnappers, led by the Egyptian Muhammed Atta.
The plane "Boeing 767", on flight 11 of American Airlines, crashed at a speed of 785 km/h into the north tower of the World Trade Center in New York, and 17 minutes later, United Airlines 175, hit the second tower.
The towers caught fire and then collapsed, killing everyone inside.
Among the victims were citizens of 77 different countries, and thousands were injured.
It took more than eight months to clear the site of the collapsed Twin Towers.
And after the plane crash in Washington, the Pentagon was rebuilt for almost a year.

Islamist extremist organization Al Qaeda, led by Osama Bin Laden planned attacks from Afghanistan. They blamed the US for the conflicts in the Muslim world.
The architect of the attack was Khalid Sheikh Muhammad.
Operation Enduring Freedom
Just a week after the attacks in New York and Washington, US President George W. Bush received authorization for war, with the support of an international coalition.
NATO activated Article 5 for the first and to date the only time, according to which an attack on one member is considered an attack on all.

Bush called on the Taliban regime to hand over all Al Qaeda leaders, promised victory in the fight against terrorism, and on October 7, 2001, officially launched Operation Enduring Freedom.
The American invasion of Afghanistan followed. The "War on Terror" continued with the invasion of Iraq in 2003 and the overthrow of Saddam Hussein.
Where is Al Qaeda today?
The war in Afghanistan lasted 19 years, 10 months and 25 days, costing two trillion dollars and claiming 170.000 lives.
Sheikh Mohammed was arrested in 2003, and Bin Laden was killed in 2011.

Al Qaeda still exists, most active in sub-Saharan Africa and poor parts of Asia. When the Americans left Afghanistan, there was a fear that this Islamist network could return.

The consequences of 9/11 were enormous.
In addition to the launched "war on terror", numerous security procedures have been put in place around the world.

Controls at airports became much stricter, the Department of Homeland Security was formed in the US, and American security services were given wider powers.
On the place where the Twin Towers once stood, today there is a memorial center, and above it rises the One World Trade Center, also known as the Freedom Tower.
