Workers' union Radio and Television of Serbia (RTS) requested an urgent response from the Parliamentary Committee for Culture and Information and announcing a competition for members Council of the Regulatory Body for Electronic Media (REM), was published on the Instagram account "Naš pRoTeSt".
"Students have been standing at the door of the RTS building for days, but who essentially blocks the public service? REM was supposed to get a new Council on November 4, 2024. However, to this day, the most important regulatory body for electronic media is not functioning," RTS workers stated in the announcement.
The union of RTS workers states that the truth is that the blockade can be ended very quickly with the decision to announce a new competition for members of the REM Council, and that the students are alarmingly warning about the dramatic deficiency in the work of the institutions.
"Why is the Assembly and the Parliamentary Committee for Culture blocking RTS and prolonging the agony of citizens and employees of the public service by their inaction? The Committee for Culture is obliged to end the existing competition due to irregularities due to which seven candidates withdrew and to announce a new competition", stated the workers of the public media service, which has already been in a blockade organized by students, with the support of citizens, for six days.
The union of RTS workers announced on Saturday its four demands, which include an urgent address to the management of the public service and competent services, the resignation of all editors and journalists who did not respect media laws and the Code of Journalists, an immediate change in the editorial concept of the RTS news program and professional reporting, and an end to the practice of sending part-time journalists and technicians to high-risk tasks, such as reporting on protests and rallies.
