Minister of Justice Slovenian Andreja Katič and Interior Minister Boštjan Poklukar submitted today resignations, since a 48-year-old man was beaten to death in front of a bar in Novi Mesto.
The murder happened in the night between Friday and Saturday after a 48-year-old man came to the bar at the invitation of his son, who called him because of threats by several Roma.
According to initial information, the man was beaten by a group of Roma in front of the bar, but the police have so far arrested one suspect, aged 20, in connection with the incident, in which the attacked man suffered serious head injuries, from which he later died, reports RTV Slovenia.
"With my resignation, I want to contribute to calming the situation, everyone must think about their responsibility," Katic said at an extraordinary press conference, while the Minister of the Interior added that he "takes objective responsibility."
Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob also spoke at the conference, announcing urgent legal changes regarding Roma issues and security.
"Violence does not disappear overnight. It is born in an environment where the punishment does not follow the deed, where justice is delayed and where responsibility loses its meaning. Yesterday's event shook us all," said Golob.
The President of Slovenia, Nataša Pirc Musar, on the occasion of the tragic event in Novi Mesto, submitted a request to hold an extraordinary session of the State Assembly (Slovenian Parliament), while the leader of the opposition Slovenian Democratic Party, Janez Janša, called for a meeting in Ljubljana, as an expression of dissatisfaction with the non-resolution of the Roma issue.
Among other things, the National Security Council decided to send additional police forces to Novo Mesto, and if necessary, to send a special police unit.
The President of the Council of the Roma Community in Slovenia, Jožek Horvat Mutz, condemned all acts of violence, as well as violations of security and endangering the lives of every citizen, expressing his deepest condolences to the family of the victim.
He added that the entire Roma community in southeastern Slovenia must be aware that all steps must be taken to immediately stop the criminal acts of individuals from the Roma community.
Citizens have been gathering in the center of Novi Mesto since morning, lighting candles for the injured local.
