Retired prosecutor Jasmina Paunović she estimated that the replaced head of the Belgrade police will Veselin Milić, one of the defendants in the case of the murder in the restaurant "27" in Senjak, apparently must be released after the detention, which was extended for 30 days.
The head of the Belgrade police was initially charged with failure to report a criminal offense and assisting the perpetrator after the commission of a criminal offense, in this case aggravated murder, after which the Higher Public Prosecutor's Office (VJT) in Belgrade dismissed the part of the report related to assisting, while the part for failure to report the criminal offense remained.
"The criminal offense charged against him belongs to the group of offenses punishable by a sentence of up to five years in prison, and the proceedings can be ended by applying the institute of opportunity. Also, the possibility that the prosecution does not have the evidence necessary for further proceedings is not ruled out," said Paunović for today's edition of the newspaper Danas.
In both cases, according to her, the VJT would be obliged to issue a decision on the dismissal of the criminal complaint.
"If such an outcome occurs, from alleged assistance in the commission of the crime of grave murder, we will end up in a situation where an unconvicted person will be able to return to the police service, given the fact that he spent 60 days in custody without legally established responsibility and without evidence that he had any participation in the commission of the said grave crime," said the retired prosecutor.
Speaking about the fact that VJT has so far issued more than 20 announcements about the "Senjak" case, Paunović states that they were contradictory and derogatory, which the prosecution "denied itself", adding that these announcements "mislead the interested public and further undermine confidence in the work of this institution".
"From the point of view of expertise, experience and additional knowledge of the functioning of the Criminal Investigation Department in Belgrade, it can be concluded that, despite the multitude of contradictory statements, the first explanation can be trusted the most. The experience so far has shown that the first information is almost always the closest to the truth. The same applies to the defense of the accused in other cases - the statements given in the first hours after the commission of the crime usually represent the most faithful account of the event, while later they are often adapted to the defense strategy," said Paunović.

The murder in the restaurant "27" in Senjak
We remind you that the now former head of the Belgrade police, Veselin Milić, was arrested together with 13 other people for the murders of Aleksandar Nešović Baja in the restaurant "27" in Senjak on May 12.
It is suspected that Nešović was shot by Saša Vuković aka Boske. New information from the prosecution says that another person has been arrested and is suspected of preparing the ground or even shooting at Nešović.
Initially, it was suspected that the crime was committed in the presence of Milić and that he, together with three other police officers from his security, participated in removing traces of the crime. On June 3, VJT announced that the criminal charges against those three police officers were dismissed, also due to a lack of evidence.
The higher public prosecutor's office in Belgrade also dismissed the criminal complaint against the former head of the Police Department for the city of Belgrade, Veselin Milić, in the part in which he is charged with the criminal offense of Assisting the perpetrator after the crime has been committed.
On May 21, Nešović's body was found in a barrel on the territory of the municipality of Inđija, in the presence of public prosecutors of the Higher Public Prosecutor's Office.
Milić was heard for the first time on May 15, the day of his arrest, when he presented his defense, and a day later he was ordered to be detained for up to 30 days. He was heard again on June 3, due to new evidence, the Higher Public Prosecutor's Office announced.
Previously, on May 29, Milić's apartment and office premises were searched, 14 days after his arrest.
After the second hearing, Milić's defense attorney, Nemanja Vasiljević, submitted to the media a part of Milić's alleged statement in which the former Belgrade police chief accuses his colleagues of framing him and of not presenting the evidence they provided in the criminal complaint to the prosecutor.
On May 12, the High Court extended the custody of Veselin Milić for another 30 days, as well as the other suspects in the "Senjak" case.
